Alright let’s talk.
Seriously y’all sweet potatoes might just be the greatest thing ever created next to Channing Tatum and rosé. Yep I just said that. I’ve made sweet potato soup, mashed sweet potatoes, thrown them in a kale and quinoa salad, but my all-time FAVORITE is making sweet potato fries! Mmmm are they good. Now there are so many ways and variations you can make these deliciously crispy fries, but my go-to recipe is sweet yet spicy. Trust me you’ll thank me later.
I’ve been making sweet potato fries for years and have tried (and failed) at using various methods to achieve that oh so perfect crisp, but when I came across Camille Styles’ method of soaking them in cold water and tossing them with cornstarch prior to baking, my life was completely changed. I mean these suckers taste like they were deep-fried! This truly does works wonders and guarantees you crisp golden brown fries every. single. time. Because who likes limp, soggy sweet potatoes?? Nope NO ONE. Now the combination of sugar and spices is all my own recipe, but I had to give credit to this incredible method of baking because it’s just TOO good!
Uh just look at them…

Amazing, right?
I love the combination of these flavors too because the chipotle chili powder gives the sweet potatoes a good spicy kick while the oregano has a nice savory element and the brown sugar not only sweetens everything up, but caramelizes the fries so that they have an even better crisp. Now if you’re absolutely anti-sugar then that’s okay too! Simply omit the brown sugar altogether because these spices still taste incredible. I just personally prefer this sweet/spicy/salty combo and don’t mind a few extra calories since I don’t make sweet potato fries very often. We’ll even use this seasoning on roasted {cubed} sweet potatoes or you could even step outside the box and make some sweet potato chips! More on those later…
Guys I’ve been having SO much fun coming up with new recipes as of late and am super happy that I’ve committed to diving back into this little blog of mine, thank you so much for all your sweet comments! Sweet and Spicy Sweet Potato Fries

Ingredients
- 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into fries
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
- 1 tablespoon coconut sugar, or brown sugar
- Sea salt, to taste
Instructions
- Once your sweet potatoes are peeled and cut into fries, place them in a large bowl and soak them in cold water for about an hour (this helps them get crispy!)
- Drain sweet potatoes, pat dry and add to a large plastic sealable bag. Add in cornstarch and shake until sweet potatoes are lightly dusted making sure there are no clumps.
- Transfer sweet potatoes to a large bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle in garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, chipotle chili powder and coconut sugar, tossing well making sure to coat the sweet potatoes entirely.
For the Oven:
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees F and line two baking sheets with foil sprayed with non-stick cooking spray, set aside.
- Spread sweet potatoes into a single layer on both baking sheets, making sure they aren’t touching each other, and bake for 15 minutes. Using a spatula toss sweet potatoes around on the sheet and spread back out into a single layer. Bake an additional 15 minutes until golden brown.
- Pull fries out of the oven and sprinkle (liberally) with sea salt and enjoy!
For the Air Fryer:
- Preheat air fryer to 380 degrees F.
- Cook in 2 or 3 batches, depending on the size of your basket without overcrowding the pan, for 12 to 13 minutes turning them halfway, until the sweet potato fries are crispy.
- Sprinkle with sea salt and enjoy!

I plan to make these tomorrow after work. Could I cut them today to save time?
Absolutely! Great idea 🙂
Kelly,
I can’t wait to try these. Do you recommend a dipping sauce? Or do you just eat them plain? Love your recipes!
Thanks!
Kelli
I personally love these plain because of all the seasonings, but a Sriracha-based dipping sauce would taste really good!
Great. Thanks, Kelly. Trying these tonight for the UK game 🙂
We’re a big fan of sweet potatoes and made these fries before, they’re super delicious! Thanks for sharing
These fries look super yummy! I love the spicy seasoning! Bet these are delicious dipped into a savoury yogurt dip like tzatziki! 😀
I think you may have just potentially changed my life! I live on sweet potato, I’ve been doing the 5:2 diet to improve my health and sweet potato fries are a firm fave side kick in majority of my dishes! I hate that they can be a bit soggy though and I don’t half crave a good deep fried chip (I’m only human!) I’m literally trying this tomorrow! Mind = blown! Xx
I think you’ll love them!! 🙂
Oh man, these look so delicious! If I wasn’t hungry before I am now!!

I love sweet potato fries and want to snack on these all day!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: potatoes are the most underrated food, particularly sweet potatoes. I would’ve never guessed to soak them in water before adding cornstarch so I’ll save this post for next time I make fries, which honestly will probably be within this week.
